Thanks to a $20,000 donation from Suncoast Credit Union, the Community Food Bank (CFB) can better serve local school-aged children.
The donation used grant funds to purchase a Toyota 3000 propane forklift and a Raymond 8210 pallet jack, which will help them continue to support local backpacking and food programs at local schools in the county.
“This equipment plays a critical role in helping us fulfill our mission to end hunger and nurture hope,” said Barbara Sprague, Executive Director of CFB. “Knapsack programs and other feeding programs have grown significantly over the years, so this additional support equipment is crucial for efficient food provisioning and delivery.”
CFB actively works with agencies such as Citrus County Blessings, People Helping People and the Citrus County School District to help children in need receive nutritious meals at school, on weekends and during school holidays. According to Sprague, BFC-supported feeding programs serve more than 2,300 children. This number is expected to grow to over 2,500 in the coming months.
“When we started supporting school-age feeding programs, they served a few hundred students each,” Sprague said. “This number continues to rise as more parents – many of whom are working adults – need food assistance.”
“We salute Suncoast Credit Union for helping us meet demand,” said Steve Ponticos, chairman of the board of directors of BFC. “Hunger is a real problem, and it’s especially prevalent in Citrus, Hernando, and Sumter counties. We provide assistance to over 70,000 people each month, something we simply couldn’t do without the support of companies like Suncoast Credit Union.
